Independent Party

Phoenicians might as well accept the sad truth: There isn't much indie cred to living in the Valley, with all of its strip malls, strip malls, and, well, you get the idea.

Then there’s Local First AZ, an organization created by Stinkweeds/Modified Arts owner Kimber Lanning that recognizes and represents cool mom-and-pops. Lanning and company ditch the big-box vibe during their Certified Local Fall Festival. The fest highlights local independent businesses and showcases the goods and services they offer along with that rare indie cred we mentioned. This year's event, the fourth in as many years, features Changing Hands Bookstore along with other Valley beloveds such as Copper Star Coffee, La Grande Orange, and Urban Cookies.

Sat., Nov. 1, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., 2008
KEEP PHOENIX NEW TIMES FREE... Since we started Phoenix New Times, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Phoenix, and we'd like to keep it that way. With local media under siege, it's more important than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" program, allowing us to keep offering readers access to our incisive coverage of local news, food and culture with no paywalls.
