Scottish actress and geek icon Karen Gillan will be heading to the Valley in early December as a special guest of Phoenix Comicon Fan Fest 2015 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.
And it's certainly big news since she’s pretty famous in geek circles for her performances in sci-fi staple Doctor Who and the blockbuster Marvel Studios film Guardians of the Galaxy.
Phoenix Comicon staff announced on October 14 that Gillan is scheduled to appear during the three-day Fan Fest, which takes place from Friday, December 4, to Sunday, December 6, at the stadium. (Fan Fest organizers have previously announced that actor Graham McTavish from The Hobbit and famed Hanna Barbara animator Tom Cook as special guests of the event.)
The announcement quickly set off rampant fervor on Facebook, including hundreds of likes and shares, among fans of Phoenix Comicon, like Joel Mercado of Nogales.
“Yes! I promise I won't make my lungs collapse and make a complete fool out of myself, but jeez she's amazing,” Mercado wrote on Facebook.
Some have even begun planning some Doctor Who cosplay for the occasion.
Fans of Doctor Who are more than a little familiar with Gillan from the two and a half seasons she played Amy Pond, the rambunctious companion of the 11th version of the legendary timelord who assisted him in saving the entire universe at least twice.
Amy also had one of the more complicated, convoluted, and complex character arcs in the 50-year history of the show, including meeting The Doctor at age seven and again at 19 before becoming a companion in his travels at the age 21.
Following her departure from Doctor Who in 2012, Gillan went on to star as Nebula, the blue-skinned being and adopted daughter of Thanos, in last summer’s Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy.
We’re certain that Gillan will pose for pictures with people wearing costumes of the Doctor Who and Guardians of the Galaxy variety when she appears at Phoenix Comicon Fan Fest on Saturday, December 5, and Sunday, December 6. Gillan is scheduled to appear at different photo opportunities and autograph sessions both days.
No details about a Q&A panel featuring Gillan during either day have been announced as of this writing, but we’re willing to bet that one will happen. And we don't need a TARDIS to be certain of that.
Phoenix Comicon Fan Fest 2015 takes place Friday, December 4, to Sunday, December 6, at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. Tickets are $30 for the full event or $10 to $20 per day.
