Mariachi Mania

While the epic footwear and “Ale-Ale-Jandro” swoons of Lady Gaga may be pop music’s item of the week, silver-studded charro outfits and wide-brimmed hats – along with vihuelas, guitarrónes, and well-placed gritos mexicanos (yells done at musical interludes) – make mariachi a time-tested triumph of music that’s lasted for centuries.

This year’s eleventh annual Chandler Mariachi Festival, produced by the Chandler Coalition for Civil and Human Rights (C3HR) and part of the city’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, expects to top over 1,000 attendees. The night will feature performances by Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez, the first mariachi ensemble to be nominated twice for a Grammy, the all-female Mariachi Flores Mexicanas, and Arizona’s own Mariachi Los Caballeros.
