ASU's Art Museum is popping an attitude. Anchored by Andy Warhol's famous "lipstick-and-peroxide" screenprint of Mao Tse-tung, a sharp-witted exhibition honoring American Pop Art also features Robert Rauschenberg's flattened cardboard-box birds and Robert Indiana's snarky screenprints (in After Mississippi, words encircling a state map read: "Just As in the Anatomy of Man Every Nation Must Have Its Hind Part"). On exhibit through September 13, "Andy Warhol and the Pop Aesthetic" combines a handful of the icon's works -- early drawings, a watercolor work and a standing-screen painting -- with pieces by artists he influenced. In 20 Peloteros Cambell's y 1 Cubano, Alfredo Manzo Cedeño employs Warhol's Campbell's Soup motif, surrounding one white-jerseyed papier-mâché baseball player with the Campbell's corporate softball team -- 20 players sporting red logo jerseys. Admission is free at the museum, 10th Street and Mill in Tempe. Call 480-965-2787 or see asuartmuseum.asu.edu. - Jill Koch

A showcase of works by a radical artist

8/8-9/20
Check out the works of a revisionary artist at the Chandler Center for the Arts, where "Checkpoints and Revisions: The Artworks of Suzanne Klotz" showcases colorful, culture-blending sculpture and paintings by the Sedona-based artist. Inspired by her international experiences as well as the cultural diversity within the U.S., Klotz's works incorporate embroidery, beads, tiles, wood and, in the case of Call to Prayer, a turntable, music and lights. An artist's reception opens the exhibition at 7 p.m., Friday, August 8. The works remain on display at the Center, 250 North Arizona Avenue in Chandler, through September 20. Call 602-786-2680 for hours. - Jill Koch

Billy Bob dons an ax of a different kind at Nita's

Tue 8/12
There is a timeless tradition in Hollywood of actors temporarily losing their minds and embarking on careers in pop music. While Billy Bob Thornton would seem to fit the profile, such a comparison would be lazy and ultimately inaccurate. The beauty of Thornton's music is in the ear of the beholder, yet there is no debating that it strays from the usual actor-turned-singer disposable pop to follow in the tradition of the man himself: dark, stripped down and unapologetic. Listen for yourself when Thornton brings his "Edge of the World" Tour to Nita's Hideaway, 3300 South Price in Tempe, on Tuesday, August 12. Showtime is 8 p.m. For details call 480-966-7715 or visit www.billybobthornton.net.- Craig Wallach
