Oh My Gourd

John Oliver assailed the season’s obsession with pumpkin spice, but that hasn’t dampened our love for that big damn orange orb. Honor that exalted squash at The Great Pumpkin Festival on Thursday, October 23.

If the Desert Botanical Garden were only providing hayrides to a pumpkin patch, we’d be in for the classic autumn activity. DBG’s going all out, though, with a hay bale maze, a petting zoo, and plenty of crafts and carnival games to keep the kids enthralled. DJ Dana spins classic country and western while live band Pick and Holler gets down with old-timey twang and harmonies.

The Great Pumpkin Festival is at the Desert Botanical Garden, 1201 North Galvin Parkway in Phoenix, through Sunday, October 26. On Thursday and Friday, fest hours run from 8:30 a.m. to noon, and hours on Saturday and Sunday are 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is included with DBG admission, which ranges from $10 to $22. Visit for more info.
