Phoenix Art Museum to Announce 2013 Contemporary Forum Award Winners

Wednesday night, Phoenix Art Museum's Contemporary Forum will recognize eight local artists who've made a mark in the contemporary scene.

The annual event celebrates up to seven emerging Arizona artists with $1,500 grants to purchase materials and one mid-career artist with $5,000 plus a special exhibition of his or her work alongside past award winners.

The 2012 grants recipients include Irma Sanchez, Kristin Bauer, James Angel, Karolina Sussland, Carolyn Lavender, Nic Wiesinger, and Paul S. Wilson. The Contemporary Forum's Mid-Career Artist Award was given to Annie Lopez.

Artwork from last year's winners will be on view at Phoenix Art Museum in the Lyons Gallery for the ceremony, which will start at 7 p.m. Lopez will also give a presentation on her work and her latest series that has its own exhibition in the museum's chase lobby.

Lopez has been a staple in the Phoenix art scene for more than 30 years and has made a name for herself with her photography. Included in her latest series are 10 dresses that Lopez fashioned from her own cyanotype photographs, which she describes as connecting with important moments in her life. Lopez's work will be up through June 30.
