"William Christenberry and Andres Serrano": The two influential American photographers, both of whom trained as painters before swapping their palettes for cameras, are feted in this exhibition, which features some of the artists' most famous--and infamous--works, including images from Christenberry's Klan Room installation and from Serrano's Fluids series. It opens with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, November 7, and continues through Saturday, December 7, at Bentley Gallery, 4161 North Marshall Way in Scottsdale. Viewing is free; hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays (and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays). For details call 946-6060.

Phoenix Symphony: Violinist Borivoj Martinic-Jercic joins the orchestra's chamber configuration, led by guest conductor Timothy Russell, for a concert of works by Copland, Mozart, Haydn and Randall Shinn at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, November 7, at Scottsdale Center for the Arts, 7380 East Second Street. Tickets are $16 and $20, available at the symphony box office (call 264-6363). Associate conductor Clotilde Otranto leads the full ensemble in an old-time rock 'n' roll show, anchored by the vintage quartet Flash Cadillac and including ditties like "Splish Splash" and "Night Train," at 8 p.m. Friday, November 8; and the same time Saturday, November 9, at Symphony Hall, 225 East Adams. A Great Day in Harlem, DIVA, and Chubby Jackson: Harlem, director Jean Bach's unrated 1995 documentary about photographer Art Kane's renowned 1958 group shot of everybody who was anybody in the golden age of jazz, screens at 8 p.m. Friday, November 8; and Saturday, November 9, at Scottsdale Center for the Arts, 7380 East Second Street. Performances by drummer Sherrie Maricle's all-woman big band DIVA follow each showing; Chubby, a former member of Woody Herman's Thundering Herd and one of the golden-agers featured in the Kane photo, is scheduled to introduce the film and "sing some scat" with DIVA. A free lecture by Patricia Myers precedes Friday's event; it starts at 7 in the center's Cinema. Show tickets are $22 and $26, available at the scene and Ticketmaster. Paul Tibbets: The commander of the Enola Gay, the deus ex machina of World War II, which ushered in the Atomic Age by dropping the bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945, is scheduled to make appearances from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, November 8, at Mesa Art 'N Framing Gallery, 48 West Main; and from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, November 9, at Impressions, Ltd., of Scottsdale, 7072 East Fifth Avenue. The 80-year-old, retired Air Force general is plugging "Flying High," a new exhibit of aviation works by Craig Kodera and William Phillips, which opens Saturday and continues through Saturday, November 30, at Impressions. Paco DeLucia, Al DiMeola and John McLaughlin: The guitarists rule the roost in their respective realms of flamenco, fusion and Third World/head-expanding strains, and they're out to rekindle the flame they started on their wonderful '83 collaboration, Passion, Grace and Fire. ASU Football: Arizona State University's Sun Devils, led by quarterback Jake "The Snake" Plummer, conclude this year's home schedule with a homecoming battle for the Rose Bowl against the Golden Bears of the University of California at Berkeley. "Celebrate Culture on Central": The seventh annual Arizona Humanities Day event, scheduled for Saturday, November 9, honors our Southwestern heritage and features activities at Phoenix Central Library, 1221 North Central; Phoenix Art Museum, 1625 North Central; Heard Museum, 22 East Monte Vista; and other locales. Highlights include a free, 3 p.m. tour of the library with architect Will Bruder and the evening lecture "Tell Us How to Prevail" by poet Luci Tapahonso at 7 in the art museum's Whiteman Hall. The Makaha Sons, Robi Kahakalau, and Cyril Pahinul: Makaha boys Moon, John and Jerome and female solo act Kahakalau are Hawaii's most successful recording artists; Pahinul is the island chain's top slack-key guitarist. David "Honeyboy" Edwards, Jimmie Lee Robinson, and Steve James: Honeyboy, 85, is one of the greatest living Delta bluesmen. Robinson's a smokin' veteran of the Chicago scene. James is an Austin, Texas-based purveyor of the Anglo/acoustic blues. The traditionalists headline Phoenix Blues Society's "Back Porch Blues" show, which also includes performances by Arizona acts Duke Draper, Tommy Dukes, Lay De Jay, Stefan George, and Les Izmore. Showtime is 6 p.m. Sunday, November 10, at the Rhythm Room, 1019 East Indian School. The cover is $8, $6 for members of the blues society and the Southwest Folk Association. New Times Phoenix 10K: The 21st annual newsprint classic includes the title race, a 5K fitness walk, the Wheelchair Athletes' 10K, an in-line skate, a 5K stroller stroll and other competitions. Graham Parker: Valley visits by rock's angriest man are few and far between, so it should be a rare privilege to see the 45-year-old punk torchbearer in the cozy confines of the Rockin' Horse, 7316 East Stetson in Scottsdale; see the story on page 99. OutKast: The appropriately named act comprises Andre and Big Boi, two friends from the Deep South who've struck it rich mining the mother lode of the Big East and Big, Bad L.A.: hip-hop. The duo's follow-up to its platinum LaFace debut, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, is a continuation of the "outsider" theme titled ATLiens. Know Qwestion shares the all-ages bill. Architecture Week '96: The fourth annual commemoration, sponsored by the Arizona chapter of the American Institute of Architects, begins on Saturday, November 9 (see "Houses of Cards" in Kid Pics), but the really good stuff starts on Monday, November 11, with a free panel discussion titled "In Search of the Good House," featuring AIA architects John Douglas, Hugh Knoell and John Kane and scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Scottsdale Civic Center Library, 3839 North Civic Center Boulevard. William Boice, a member of the team that built the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed First Christian Church, 6750 North Seventh Avenue, leads a free tour of that facility at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 12. The second annual Architectural Film Festival features screenings of Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision (unrated) and another film to be announced and a lecture by Dan Harkins, Valley cinema-builder deluxe. The fest starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday, November 13, at Harkins Centerpoint 11, Mill and University in Tempe; tickets are $3 and $5. The Connells: Ten-gallon hats off, once again, to Scottsdale honky-tonk the Rockin' Horse for its freewheelin' booking policy. The venue, 7316 East Stetson, is bringing in Graham Parker on Sunday (see above) and these underrated jangle-rock progenitors from North Carolina on Tuesday, November 12. ASU Basketball: Bill Frieder's Arizona State University roundballers hit the court for the first time this season at 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 12, for an exhibition match against the Croatian national team. ASU's women cagers, led by first-year coach Charli Turner Thorne, open play at 6 p.m. Wednesday, November 13, with an exhibition versus Ruzembrook, a team comprising various European players.
