Race War

We aren’t allowed to tell you about Dagger Deathrace II. In fact, organizers would probably prefer it if you weren’t reading this, particularly if you’re a po-po. Why? Because DDR is a crazy-ass underground urban bicycle race (a.k.a. an “alleycat”) that will take to the streets on Friday, October 31. It’s a little like Fight Club in the sense that people involved with the event are keeping their lips sealed. They’ve even got a code phrase to identify others in their scene.

Here’s what else we know: Teams of two will depart in furiously fast fashion from an unknown starting point, engaging in a scavenger-hunt-like bike race. Many will be on fixed-gear cycles (single-speed, direct-drive rides popular with bike messengers). They’ll hit several checkpoints and participate in whacked-out “challenges” (last year’s event included chugging beers and hot sauce and getting rubbings off gravestones at Tempe Butte Cemetery). The top finishers will secure prizes from Sabre Sunglasses, Vans, F.B.M., and Dong Bong.

E-mail [email protected] or visit on the day of the event for the starting time and location. Just don’t say you heard about it from us.
