Scottsdale Desert Stages Theater rarely sees sold out opening weekends in its quaint, 65-seat venue. That is, until now. When the community theatre chose A Raisin in the Sun for their first Actors Café production of the year, the play already had a groundbreaking history.

The show chronicles the story of an African-American family dealing with the loss of a father and an unexpected insurance policy windfall in 1950s Chicago, and was the first Broadway play written by an African-American woman (Lorraine Hansberry). Following its 1959 release, the classic tale continued to be revived over the years with such superstars as Sidney Poitier, Phylicia Rashad, and even P-Diddy.

Fridays-Sundays. Starts: Feb. 11. Continues through April 3, 2011
