Hate musical theater? Check out Theater Works’ The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!), which heaps ridicule on Rodgers, Hammerstein, Sondheim, Fosse, Lloyd Webber, and other dinosaurs, uh, we mean innovators of the form. Writers Joanne Bogart and Eric Rockwell take the basic story of two young lovers, an evil landlord, and a wise older woman, repeat it four times in vastly different styles, and make all the hurt go away with gales of laughter.
Devoted Bill, sweet June, villainous Jitter, and beloved Abby confront urban angst, serial murder, modern art, political turmoil, and rows and rows of corn. Also dream ballets, raunchy cabaret numbers, quirky love duets, inspirational ballads, and splashy show-stoppers about the leading lady making it down that damn staircase.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m.; Wed., March 27, 2 p.m. Starts: March 15. Continues through April 7, 2013
