Songs Remain the Same

Ways to enjoy music keep evolving, allowing us to niche-ify our listening without all that laborious groove-counting, stylus-dropping, and mixtape-making. It makes sense, then, that the musical revue, which begat the "jukebox musical," has enabled the playlist musical. Now, instead of asking Pandora or your iPod for some sweet soul music with a showtuney flair, you can get it live at The Soul of Broadway, a revival of a popular summer delight at Fountain Hills Theatre.

Local groove merchant Mitchell Vantrease co-created the show, which features tunes you might expect -- selections from Dreamgirls, Smokey Joe's Cafe, Memphis, Porgy and Bess, and Ain't Misbehavin' -- along with "deep cuts" from Ragtime and Big River and surprising arrangements of numbers from Gypsy and My Fair Lady. In addition to Vantrease, the case features Chanel Bragg, fresh from burning up the stage in Rent.

Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: Aug. 17. Continues through Aug. 26, 2012
