Its a pretty universal truth that no one gets nostalgic for puberty. Neither do most people go through a best friends suicide, a girlfriends pregnancy, and several musical numbers complete with dancing before the end. That alone could make anyone sympathetic toward Malchior, the brilliant and sensitive (arent they all?) hero of the Broadway musical Spring Awakening. The play encompasses the adolescent adventures of two young men and a young woman in 1891 Germany as all the confusion and thrill of hormonal change combine with the repressive morals and stodgy adults of the time and place. Its moving, a little cheesy (like we said, its Broadway), and at moments utterly brilliant. And thats just one of the songs, the surreally named Totally Fucked. Because whats a Broadway tragedy without fabulous tunes and dancing? Tony-winning tunes and dances, in fact, as Spring Awakening won eight Tonys, including Best Musical of 2007.
