It’s a pretty universal truth that no one gets nostalgic for puberty. Neither do most people go through a best friend’s suicide, a girlfriend’s pregnancy, and several musical numbers complete with dancing before the end. That alone could make anyone sympathetic toward Malchior, the brilliant and sensitive (aren’t they all?) hero of the Broadway musical Spring Awakening. The play encompasses the adolescent adventures of two young men and a young woman in 1891 Germany as all the confusion and thrill of hormonal change combine with the repressive morals and stodgy adults of the time and place. It’s moving, a little cheesy (like we said, it’s Broadway), and at moments utterly brilliant. And that’s just one of the songs, the surreally named “Totally Fucked.” Because what’s a Broadway tragedy without fabulous tunes and dancing? Tony-winning tunes and dances, in fact, as Spring Awakening won eight Tonys, including Best Musical of 2007.
