Each week Gem features one standout piece from a local shop. Whether it's a jacket, necklace, or handbag, it's on our have-to-have list.

What: This open-knit, cocoon-style cardi from Splendid is perfect for late-fall layering, both over long-sleeve shirts and under heavier coats. It's lightweight, but not paper thin, in a wintery, neutral deep gray (not unlike this classic sweater from Yves Saint Laurent), with a relaxed fit and batwing sleeves (Nasty Gal's all about 'em). Wrap up while the weather takes a cool turn, then tote the sweater throughout spring to ward off its wishy washy whims, and during summer's blasting air conditioning.

Where: Bunky Boutique

Cost: $76

Style It: Dressing for cold weather with this sweater requires complementary pieces that will easily fit under and over it, like a warming, lengthy scarf from Acne, on-trend Marc by Marc Jacobs cape, and a chic cashmere top. Choose a bold bag in an animal print as the outfit's flashy focal point, and wear a knotted lariat, like this one from Philippe Audibert Wollaston, for a chic, understated look.

Keep Phoenix New Times Free... Since we started Phoenix New Times, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Phoenix, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism.
