Tome Sweet Tome

A librarian's search takes him far beyond the card catalogue in Underneath the Lintel, the off-Broadway hit being co-produced by ASU West's Department of Interdisciplinary Arts and Performance and the Valley's new nonprofit iTheatre Collaborative. Hailed as "a wonderful metaphor for life's meaning," Glen Berger's play tracks an obsessed librarian's intercontinental quest for answers -- and a hefty fine -- when a book is returned 113 years overdue. Underneath the Lintel opens Wednesday, September 10, and runs through Sunday, September 14. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at ASU West's Second Stage West, in the lower level of the University Center Building on the ASU West campus, 4701 West Thunderbird. Tickets are $12 for adults, $9 for seniors and $6 for students; call 602-543-ARTS for reservations. - Jill Koch

Rock of Ages

Band performs in Tempe

Mon 9/8
While their name was inspired by the biker gang in Marlon Brando's The Wild One, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club isn't the kind of band that inspires drag racing and fighting in the streets. Instead, with a sound that mixes fuzzed-out '60s psychedelia with distorted, layered guitars reminiscent of the early-'90s Manchester scene, BRMC just makes listeners want to run to the nearest record store to snag a copy of their just-released album, Take Them On, On Your Own. The band performs with the Warlocks at Nita's Hideaway in Tempe on Monday, September 8. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 at the door or $10 in advance from Ticketmaster, 480-784-4444. - Michele Laudig

Action Hero

Versatile star performs at the Improv

Comedian Jay Mohr first hit the big time as a regular on Saturday Night Live, then made his first Hollywood splash in 1996, starring as a sports agent opposite Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire. Since then he's gone on to make movies with Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston and Katie Holmes, as well as star in his own short-lived but critically acclaimed Fox sitcom, Action. He also regularly guest-hosts a top sports radio program, The Jim Rome Show, but Mohr's roots are in the rough-and-tumble standup comedy scene. The strong-jawed funnyman will hold court at the Tempe Improv, 930 East University, from Thursday, September 4, through Sunday, September 7. Showtime is 8 p.m. Thursday and Sunday, and tickets are $22. Friday's and Saturday's shows are 8 and 10 p.m.; tickets are $25. Call 480-921-9877 for reservations. - Brendan Joel Kelley
