One new idea for every day in 2011. We're talking big, small, local, international, in action, and on the drawing board. Here's today's -- what's yours?

Graphic designers and Drew Roper and Ryan Paule needed a distraction for their day-to-day grind. Looking for a challenge and a bit of friendly competition, the two began Type Fight, a weekly face-off in typeface design.

Each week, Roper and Paule choose a character and give themselves a limited amount of time to design that character. The results are then posted on the Type Fight website and put up for public vote. The winner takes bragging rights.

In recent weeks, Roper and Paule have found more competitors in cities outside their homes in St. Louis and Chicago to fight in what they call the typographic ring.

Check out their progress (they have quite a few characters to go), vote for your favorite, and find out how you can enter the battle right here.

Keep Phoenix New Times Free... Since we started Phoenix New Times, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Phoenix, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Phoenix with no paywalls.
