Weekly Freebie: "MASHup" Roundtable Discussion at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art

Each week, Jackalope Ranch brings you a free event, workshop, or you-name-it happening in Phoenix. Because sometimes the best things in life really are free. This week's freebie: MASHup Roundtable Discussion: "Is it Legal?"

If you've had a chance to check out one of SMoCA's most recent exhibitions, "MASHup: New Video Art," listened to musicians like Girl Talk, or simply fooled around YouTube, you may have wondered to yourself: Where do we draw the line?

Remixing elements of multiple pre-existing songs and videos by various artists, mash-ups do well to highlight the universal trends in pop culture and mass media -- but is it legal?

This Thursday at 7 p.m., guests are invited to join a roundtable discussion in the SMoCA Lounge regarding the legitimacy of mash-up media, specially as it applies to SMoCA's "MASHup" exhibit. The discussion will be moderated by SMoCA assistant curator Claire C. Carter and feature such in-the-know participants as DJ Alex Votichenko (a.k.a. Djentrification), exhibiting video artist Natalie Bookchin, and copyright lawyer Michael Cordier.

Thursday nights at SMoCA are always free, so take the time to check out "MASHup: New Video Art," as well other spring exhibits at the museum before or after the discussion. For more information, visit SMoCA online.
