Perhaps the coolest things about the musical version of the film 9 to 5 are the designs (which drag us back to the big hair, giant eyeglasses, and distinctive color schemes of the early ’80s workplace) and the plot, almost point-for-point the same zany, empowering story that made the movie a hit, along with lots more catchy and character-appropriate songs by Dolly Parton. In the couple of years the show’s been available to regional and community theaters, it’s proved a big favorite, which softens the blow of its lukewarm Broadway reception.

Enjoy the antics of Judy, Violet, and Doralee, complete with poor, clueless, oppressive Mr. Hart dangling from a harness, at Fountain Hills Theatre, 11445 North Saguaro Boulevard, through Sunday, June 8. Tickets are $20 to $25 at www.fhtaz.org. Call 480- 837-9661, extension 3, to discuss senior and other discounts. Curtain time on Friday, May 30, is 8 p.m.

Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: May 16. Continues through June 8, 2014
