Along with the official grand opening of Canteen Modern Tequila Bar on October 15 and 16 (the place soft opens tonight), developer DMB Commercial just announced three more eateries in the works for downtown Tempe's Centerpoint on Mill.
First up, for mid-October, will be Dog Town Chili Dogs, next to Madcap Theater at 690 S. Mill #110. Owner Ralph Camarillo will serve chili dogs from an old family recipe, along with Kosher and stadium dogs smothered in all kinds of gourmet toppings.
(Considering that Cutie's just opened a gourmet dog shack a couple blocks away, I have to wonder, how many weenies can Tempe handle? Time will tell . . .)
Local gourmet popcorn purveyors Poppa Maize -- who won a year's worth of free rent in the Mill Avenue Retail Competition -- are about to open their second location in November. They'll also be situated next to Madcap, which is pretty genius. Why get plain old movie theater popcorn at the concession stand when you can swing by here for popcorn that tastes like S'Mores, French onion, cheesy chipotle, or other funky flavors?
And early next year, Mellow Mushroom pizzeria will take over the former Z Gallerie storefront on Mill Avenue at 7th Street.
Along with specialty pizzas like the "Magical Mystery Tour" (pesto, mushrooms, spinach, feta, and jalapenos) and the "Hot Potato Pie" (a garlicky white pizza with potato, bacon, onion, sour cream, cheddar, mozzarella, chives, and a drizzle of ranch dressing), they'll serve hoagies, salads, calzones, and other snacks.
Jay Beskind, local franchise owner and operator, promises late-night hours (3 a.m. weekdays, 4 a.m. weekends) and 48 beers on tap.
