Now this is a home tour you can sink your teeth into. All over town, artists, architects, pastry chefs, fire departments, and neighborhood schools are busy creating and building -- out of gingerbread.

After Hours Gallery and Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) of Phoenix are partnering to present the first annual HOME SWEET HOME Gingerbread House auction. The fundraiser honors the 35th anniversary of the NHS, a Phoenix non-profit organization, offering programs and services for neighborhoods and home- buyers, targeting revitalization, affordability and sustainability.

The rules encourage the builder to make the house represent his or her life, career or special interest. Eighty percent of the house must be made from edible materials. (And sorry Michael's, no kits allowed.)

Pastry Chef Carol Konyha's sugar coated hands have been busy putting together themed houses including a 1930's Phoenix adobe, an Amsterdam row house and even a house devoted to the rivalry between U of A and ASU. Other imaginative entries include a licorice-covered vacuum (The Queen of Clean) and a gingerbread scene inside a gingerbread T.V.

The houses will be auctioned on December 3 with bids beginning at $50. Entries will remain on display until Dec 19th, leaving winning bidders plenty of time to spice up their holiday decor.
