With amateur mixology on the rise, it was only a matter of time before amateur spirit-making, its highly-illegal cousin, started gaining steam. Circumventing the whole messy legality business with home distilling, Darby Smart is offering a way that you can feel like you made your very own gin without actually making any liquor. All you need to do is buy the kit and buy your own booze base and boom-- you've totally made your own gin.

From the Darby Smart website, it seems this "DIY Gin Kit" is basically a $49 box with some kitschy apothecary-style glass bottles (because booze enthusiasts love the whole late 1800s aesthetic), juniper berries, some other botanicals, a funnel, and a strainer. From there all you need to do is buy some vodka and dump the botanicals in.
Or for way, way cheaper you can buy a bottle of vodka, take a shot, cram some botanicals of your choosing into the bottle's extra space, and wait for it to infuse and "become gin." Or you can just buy a bottle of gin because none of this is really making gin, though it is creating some interesting botanically-infused vodka or what's known as a "compound gin". There's nothing wrong with that, but it does seem silly to keep insisting that you're actually making gin.
