A look into my trial and mostly error farm in the middle of the city.

Growing sweet corn was at the very top of the wish list for my little farm. After assessing the sun situation, we picked a nice 20 x 20 spot on the north side of the yard.

I rented a rototiller from good ol' Home Depot to tear up all those wonderful weeds that shot up from nowhere after the epic rains of 2010. It was $50 very well spent.

I mixed in 10 bags of Omni Planting Compost to amend the terrible soil in the yard. I heard all about checking the pH levels of the soil, but I decided to throw caution to the wind and just go for it.

I purchased 4 different varieties of sweet corn from Burpee.com. Early & Often, Peaches & Cream, Kandy Korn and Silver Choice. These are "SE," which means they have the highest sugar content and there is no need to isolate them from each other.

I also made sure that each of the four varieties matured at different times as not to have too much of a good thing at once.

It's a bit patchy -- thanks, birds.

I also had some extra space and threw some carrot seeds down at the end of the bed. I wasn't sure if they had a chance, but I guess I was wrong!

Next time, the ever so crucial garden boxes are built.

It's my first garden! Feel free to tell me what I'm doing wrong or suggest plants that you want to see me attempt to grow.
