What's up at Whataburger? Recently, it's been their newest limited-time menu item, a Chocolate Brownie Pie featuring warm chocolate brownie filling in a crust pod for 99 cents.

"Our customers have grown up on our fried pies, and our newest pie offers a rich, delicious chocolate option," said Rich Scheffler, Whataburger's director of marketing.

Notice he didn't say brownie. Here comes the rub, folks.

No brownie. Not a trace.

There's brown goo inside that's fairly tasteless except for a hint of dried cocoa powder. Was that the brownie? The crust isn't flaky, it's more of a hardened shell with small, fried dough bubbles covering it like bad acne. The experience is less fried pie and more nuked pastry from the vending machine. And for 99 cents, you get what you pay for.

Whataburger's done limited-run pie flavors before like strawberry, cherry, and lemon. The Chocolate Brownie Pie is a fried fib. Skip it and keep the extra buck.
