Today Elvis Presley would have celebrated his seventy-fifth birthday and thousands of fans will gather to spend the weekend honoring the Rock and Roll music legend at his home in Memphis. Even if you don't consider yourself a fan, there is no denying that Elvis Presley's contribution to music was as unmistakably large as his late-life waistline.
Unfortunately, we can't make the pilgrimage to Graceland, so in tribute to the King, we're indulging in a little treat, the famous fried peanut butter and banana sandwich.
The sandwich was said to a a favorite late night treat for the singer and rumor has it that he would eat dozens of them in one sitting. We recommend a single sandwich and the recipe for one is as follows:
- 2 slices white bread
- One half mashed banana
- Peanut butter
- Butter
- Powdered sugar (optional)
Spread the peanut butter on both sides of the bread. Add the mashed bananas to one side and make a sandwich. The bananas can be sliced as well, but mashing keeps them from slipping out of the sandwich later on. Next, melt a generous pat of butter in a frying pan over medium heat.
Grill the sandwich until the bread is toasted on both sides. Sprinkle powdered sugar over the top, slice in half and prepare to channel your inner Fat Elvis!
