If you frequent local farmers' markets, no doubt you've been tempted by Andrea White's sassy, swanky, sexy (can you tell we love her names?!) Saffron Kitchen pies.

Now White is presenting a one-night pop up dinner, Thursday, May 19, at Cycle, called "Ubuntu in Phoenix." The price is $35, and the food will be South African -- true to her roots.

White quotes Desmond Tutu on the meaning of Ubuntu: "the essence of being human. Ubuntu speaks particularly about the fact that you can't exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness."

White adds, "What better way to have Ubuntu than sharing a meal. Our guests will be seated at one table and be surrounded by South African music & candlelight."

The menu:

Starters (select one): Arugula salad with peppadews stuffed with chevre; or Vegetable samosas with dipping sauce
Main course (select one): Bobotie: curried mince (ground beef), raisins & almonds baked with a custard topping; or Fish cakes: cod & potatoes with a roasted mielie (corn) & cucumber relish; or Sexy Pie: spinach, portobello & shiitake mushrooms with ricotta, feta & mozzarella cheese
Dessert (select one): Melk tert or rooibos tea; Malva pudding or vanilla ice cream

White cautions that menu items might depend upon availability of ingredients. Local purveyors include Alaskan Pride Seafood, Crow's Dairy, JH Beef and Sweet Republic.

The event honors a friend of White's who passed away recently, and profits will go to a charity called the Darling Trust, designed to assist the residents of Darling, a town on the west coast of South Africa.
