It's hard not to care about clothing and fashion when your passion lies in the visual arts, namely photography. And local photographer Tyler Nevitt says his daily wardrobe inspiration comes from the grungy feel of concerts and early 90s style.
The 25-year-old describes his style as dressy, but laid back; he never wears socks and treasures staple pieces in his closet. Nevitt steers clear of most retail stores, and instead does his best to scope out East Valley thrift shops and wear his favorite pieces until they give out, prompting the cycle to start again.
What are you wearing right now?
I am wearing a very bright cardigan from Urban Outfitters (it was on the clearance rack and it was so god awful and ugly that I had to buy it), a Miles To Go T-shirt, jeans from a skate shop, and comfortable loafers from Goodwill.
What's the last item of clothing you bought?
I recently ordered a pair of Chukka boots off of Amazon. I had wanted them for a long time.
What is the item of clothing you most covet at the moment?
I want a dream catcher necklace but I haven't found one I like. I think I'm going to buy the individual parts and putting it together myself. I want to be able to personalize it.
Give us a childhood memory of you and your clothes...
I was super dorky. My parents bought my clothing up until junior high and my grandparents would take me shopping too, so I wore a lot of flannel shirts, jeans and striped shirts.
It's funny that I've actually reverted to that style again. It suits me.
Name five items every man should have in his closet...
They should have a nice blazer, a comfortable scarf, a good pair of casual dress shoes (that you can wear to a date and walk around without getting blisters), a nice hat, and you can never have too many ties. I have a couple bow ties and couple skinny ties.
Name an item of clothing that's best when it's vintage...
You can't beat an old pair of vintage boots or loafers from Italy. The ones I'm wearing right now are Bostonian from Italy and they're the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. You can't put a price on that. Plus, it's actually fairly easy to find shoes in the East Valley thrift stores like Goodwill or Savers.
Name an item of clothing you should NEVER buy used...
Never buy a hat used. You don't know where that's been. I'm OCD about my hair and the whole sweat stain ring bugs me too... most people take care of their shoes but not their hats.
What's your one piece of fashion advice for Phoenix?
Don't give a fuck what people think just wear what's comfortable and looks good on you. Everyone's different as long as you're not setting yourself up to look like everyone else, you'll be fine.
