Third Friday's here, Phoenix. Here are three shows not to miss tonight.
When one artistic medium overlaps another, the result can be pretty sweet. Such is the case for the spring exhibition "Sugar Cookies." This mixed-media collaboration combines words with images from Florida-based artist Jenny Odom, who used to live in Phoenix, and Montessori student/budding Phoenix poet Eleri Mosier. The duo began their project through social media after Odom discovered Mosier's writing through her mother's Facebook page.

Their exchange of words and art over time and across the country will make its debut in the "Sugar Cookies" opening reception from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, April 18, at the The Hive Gallery, 2222 North 16th Street. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. "Cindy Schnakel: For the Birds"
"Bizarre, sometimes nonsensical, whimsical, and a little dark" is how artist Cindy Schnackel describes her sense of humor as well as her work, which is primarily silly and surreal portraits of birds. While some of her paintings show birds watching TV and others show birds at an art gallery, all of her work displays that odd humor, which is on view at R. Pela Contemporary Art (owned by longtime New Times contributor Robrt Pela) alongside local vintage-inspired artist Scott Wolf.
"You can tell there are two artists in the show since Scott's and my style differ," Schnackel says of the juxtaposed exhibit. "And yet the common thread of fun and absurdity carries through the whole exhibit."
Schnackel's "For The Birds" exhibit and Wolf's work will be on view at R. Pela Contemporary Art at 335 West McDowell Road through Monday, April 28. Guided by Voices' Robert Pollard Pollard's artwork has evolved into a separate career. In 2008, Fantagraphics Books published a collection of his pieces, Town of Mirrors, and around the same time, he began exhibiting his work in galleries. With Pollard presenting his art at Modified Arts in Phoenix as part of the group show "Chimerical," which opens Friday, April 18, he took time to answer a few questions from Jackalope Ranch about his visual work by e-mail from his home in Dayton, Ohio.
