Besides doing fun relationship stuff like arguing about how to
discipline our dog, New Times blogger Tyler Hughes and his girlfriend,
Jackie Cronin, go to the movies.
Tyler: I've had some pretty bad bosses in my day but I don't think I would ever actually try and kill any of them. Especially after seeing Horrible Bosses, it looks like too much work. What about you, any bosses you would like to have had offed?
Jackie: Not really, I've been pretty lucky. Can't say the same for these guys though. Between being a manipulative psycho, a blackmailing nympho and a jackass coke-head, Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston and Colin Farrell, totally win for worst bosses. I wish that I didn't know that Colin Farrell was playing the boss though, I think it would have had the same effect as Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder. Who was your favorite horrible boss?
Tyler: Well, Kevin Spacey always plays a great bad guy, and he was definitely on top of his game, but it was fun to see Jennifer Aniston out of her usual Friends role and playing an inappropriate nympho dentist. Plus she was half naked for half of her scenes. Poor Charlie Day, having to endure all of her sexual hi-jinks. He had it easy though compared to Jason Bateman and Jason Sudeikis. By the way, Charlie Day is hilarious. I've only seen him in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but I have never been disappointed.
Tyler: Well, I'm not actually a really big fan of him. I think that he tends to ham it up just a bit, and some of his edgier stuff doesn't always work. I find it kind of hard to buy in to his character sometimes. This movie is kind of like an exercise in the hypothetical. Imagine for a second that these three guys actually have the balls to try and kill their bosses. What would happen? Apparently a lot of really funny stuff.
Jackie: I kind of see what you mean. It was a little bit difficult to buy in to the idea that these guys would actually try and kill their bosses, but once you just accepted that as part of the story everything else flowed pretty well. After all, I want to see what happens when these guys try and kill their bosses, whether that's drag racing in a Prius, accidentally spilling $10K in cocaine or taking advice from a "murder consultant." Please, Tyler, just let me live in my hilarious summer movie fantasy.
Tyler: Alright, I won't deny that I laughed a ton during this movie. It was way funnier than I thought it was going to be, and I definitely appreciate that it had more laughs than were in the trailer. I'll give this a solid B. What do you think?
Jackie: I'll give it a B+. It had pretty much everything I was looking for in a summer comedy and I was a little surprised that I enjoyed it so much. Also, Jason Bateman. That man can do no wrong.
Tyler: Apparently you haven't seen The Switch.
