Looking for something to do this week? "Night Owl" is a quick guide to special nights at bars and clubs around town. We'll give you a few hints re: cover, dress code, music and atmosphere. Every Monday marks Savoy Night at Ghost Lounge at Hotel San Carlos.
Monday nights at the Hotel San Carlos are not your average downtown Phoenix dance nights. Each week, the historic hotel hosts Savoy Night, where guests can sip on vintage cocktails while learning (and showing off) a few swing dance moves.
The Savoy Hop Cats, Nathaniel and Elizabeth Smalley, give an introductory swing dance lesson from 7 to 8 p.m., and then dance floor is a free-for-all for dancers of all levels.
Check out a slideshow of last week's action here and a full rundown after the jump...
The Place: Ghost Lounge at Hotel San Carlos, 202 N. Central Ave., Phoenix
The Time: 7 p.m. to 12 a.m., every Monday
The Cover: $8
The Parking: Free parking at 1st Ave. and Van Buren if you stay until at least 10 p.m. Valet parking is available as well.
The People: Ages range from 20s to 40s, and the crowd is pretty diverse, except for an overall appreciation for all things swing.
The Style: Very retro. Styles from the '30s through '50s dominated the evening. People seem to really embrace the opportunity to don their fedoras and poodle skirts.
What we loved: If you don't have a partner, it's no problem. The lesson included partner swapping and a bunch of guests arrive solo.
What we didn't love: The early end time.
