Grand Avenue is about to get even more livable, thanks to a future complex of apartment-converted shipping containers aptly called Containers on Grand.
The container-based housing, located at Grand and 12th avenues, is expect to open in March of 2015. While developers have only secured permits for eight units, they would like to ultimately push that number to 20 by utilizing an adjacent lot.
According one of the project's investors, Kathleen Santin, Containers on Grand will be the first market rate container apartment project in the country, which means that it will offer prices that are deemed average for the modern day housing market. Santin hopes that the Container on Grand will serve as a solution for those who are looking to live downtown but uninterested in low-income housing or luxury condos.

Design and construction of the rehabbed shipping container apartments is being handled by StarkJames, LLC of Scottsdale. Each studio apartment will offer 740 square feet of interior space with a washer and dryer, as well as kitchen, bath, storage, and living space. Monthly rent is projected to range from $850 to $950. Developers are also looking into adding communal amenities such as bike racks, wi-fi, an outdoor grill, and a bocce ball area.
