Pool parties are largely a pursuit of the daytime, right? Yeah, to a certain degree, but that doesn't mean that summertime swim scene -- especially in and around Scottsdale -- ceases once the oppressive sun sinks below the horizon. To the contrary, things seem to get a bit livelier when darkness falls.

That's true at any of the Scottsdale nightlife havens that boast a pool -- such as Maya, El Santo, or Spanish Fly, for instance -- as each establishment offers a place to see and be seen in your bikini and boardshorts in the evening hours.

And during the month of August, each will offer after-dark events with more than just a place to whet your whistle while waist-deep in the water. To wit: There are weekly outdoor movie screenings at Maya, dancing shenanigans on tap at El Santo, and even volleyball in the pool over at Spanish Fly. Read on for full details.

CineMaya at Maya Day and Nightclub

That huge outdoor LED screen at Maya in Scottsdale, supposedly the biggest of its kind in Arizona, isn't only for displaying trippy videos set to EDM. Every Thursday evening, it broadcasts cult classics and crowd favorites and turns the pool area into a dive-in theater. Last week, the featured movie was the goofy Will Ferrell/John C. Reilly comedy Step Brothers (Catalina wine mixer anyone?), while this week it's the '80s fun of The Goonies. Each week, candy and popcorn can be had for a small fee, tubes are available for free, and private cabanas go for $100. The flicks start at 8:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Monday Night Swim at Spanish Fly

A normally boring weekday like a Monday isn't completely bereft of after-dark adventures or late-night fun. Spanish Fly in Scottsdale has been encouraging the tanned and toned crowd to stay up late on a work night via this Monday evening affair that's just as energetic and well attended as some of its weekend offerings. Both guest bartenders and guest DJs are featured at each edition, ladies in bikinis get free champagne until 11 p.m., and there are also ultra-competitive volleyball games in the pool. Doors open at 9 p.m. with no cover.

Relentless Beach Night Swim at El Santo Cantina

The outdoor patio at El Santo in North Scottsdale tends to feature a lot of activity during a Relentless Beach Night Swim and it isn't just limited to its pool. As the video below depicts, almost every portion of the 15,000 square-foot area is filled with partying fun of some sort, whether it's the usually animated social scene at either of its two bars, the massive amount of dancing in front of the DJ booth (which hosts special guests selectors and EDM producers), or people splashing around in the water. Such is likely to be the case during the next edition of the event on Saturday, August 31, when Cosmic Gate will be the headlining DJs during Labor Day Weekend. The party starts at 9 p.m. General admission is $15 and VIP access is $35.
