Arizona State University's School of Art will move some of its graduate studio programs to downtown Phoenix's warehouse district.

Five of the school's 10 programs are headed for a 26,232-square-foot space in the historic Levine Machine building at 605 E. Grant St., and the relocation is projected to be complete by May 15, 2014.

"This marks a new era for the ASU School of Art," says Adriene Jenik, the school's director, via press release. "Having a range of student graduate programs in a space that is designed to support their needs and that is worthy of their talents is a dream of mine."

The move will happen in two waves. By January 15, 2014, the graduate painting and drawing programs, studios, and Step Gallery will be in Phoenix. The sculpture, fiber, and intermedia programs will make the move by mid-May 2014. Other programs will remain in Tempe.

An opening reception is slated for 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, January 17, 2014. The event will allow the public to tour the newly occupied 250-square-foot studio spaces and view work by graduate students in the drawing and painting programs.

The art school is part of the Herberger Institute for Design and the Art, which also offers degrees in design, film, dance, theatre, music, and arts, media, and engineering and has about 5,800 students. The school oversees the ASU Art Museum and the Ceramics Research Center. The CRC is slated to move in 2014, though it will remain in Tempe.
