If you're a local artist and the idea of living in a cushy creative commune over-looking downtown Phoenix, celebrating the upcoming holidays with your artwork or making trash and recyclables into something dope sounds exciting, our new seven calls to artists may get your brush wet. 7. Applications for Creative Commune: One of the more interesting happenings locally for artists isn't so much an upcoming event as it is a complete lifestyle overhaul.
Ben Bethel, owner of central Phoenix's adored Clarendon Hotel, issued in a Facebook post his plans to open a "creative commune." The commune would exist among his three combined Downtown Phoenix high-rise penthouses.
After a rigorous application process for a catch-all of artists including but not limited to musicians, painters, chefs, writers, healers, etc., those selected would be able to ditch their nine-to-five grind and live rent-free in Bethel's commune in order to fully pursue their artistic endeavors.
There is already space for both a recording studio and an artist studio in what Bethel referred to as an Andy Warhol-ish Factory type of setup, "but without any of the craziness."

6. Hanging Gardens & Woven Fences and Trashy Sculpture:. The "Hanging Gardens & Woven Fences and Trashy Sculpture" project will take place Oct. 20 10 to 8 p.m. during the fourth annual Grand Avenue Festival.
Whether you choose to craft the bizarre or elegant is entirely up to you, however, a majority of it must be made from trash or recycled materials. There's also a $35 stipend available through Kooky Krafts Shop for youth groups (high school age and younger) which will include supplies like glitter, paint and glue.
The event perfectly suits the festival, which celebrates the curious and thrilling history of Grand Avenue and its surrounding community.

5. NALAC Arts Spaces Grant: The National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures is accepting applications for the NALAC Diverse Arts Spaces Grant.
The Grant is a funding initiative for the presentation or commissioning of Latino artists in visual arts, dance, music, performance art and theater. The NALAC works with organizations that are part of the Ford Foundation as well as grantees of the LINC Space for Change Planning and Pre-Development program to reach out to Latino artists.
Applications must be submitted by Sept. 14.

4. Arizona Pro Arte Open Call: Arizona Pro Arte has issued an open call for artists interested in locking up exhibition spaces for their season-opening "Prometheus: The Origin of the Arts event Sept 21.
The exhibition will combine a chamber orchestra concert with visual arts and will be broken up into different parts. Part one involves selected artists' work being displayed before the concert, during intermission and following the concert. Part two will consist of three to six artists creating new art live during the second half of the concert.
The application deadline is August 31, 2012.

3. XICO Inc. el Dia de los Muertos: XICO's el Dia de los Muertos /A Celebration of Life Festival is calling upon artists to help celebrate the 33 year of the event.
The festival is being held at Dr. A.J. Chandler Park in downtown historic Chandler on Nov. 3 from 11 to 6 p.m. and will include live entertainment, ethnic food, live art and other events.

2. Xico Inc. Hispanic Heritage Exhibition: XICO Inc. is partnering with the City of Gilbert to put on the second annual Hispanic Heritage Exhibition. The event will be held at Gilbert Town Hall. One to two pieces from each artist will be displayed from Sept. 12 to Oct.15 in Gilbert City Hall buildings and the library. They will be accepting both artwork that is for sale as well as not-for-sale. All artwork must be ready to hang and framed (if not canvas stretched). Sizes are flexible and there is no formal theme. All artwork must be delivered to XICO Sept. 5 to 10.

The Scottsdale City Council has approved an expansion of the Tony Nelssen Equestrian Center at Westworld, which means they are currently accepting qualifications from artists to create iconic sculptural artwork for the center.
The art project budget is an estimated $375,000 and applications are due by Sept. 10 at midnight.
