Each week Gem features one standout piece from a local shop. Whether it's a jacket, necklace, or handbag, it's on our have-to-have list.

What: This handmade skull brooch is perfect for fall -- particularly with Halloween and Dia de los Muertos a couple weeks away.

With a wink toward Mexican folk art, the whimsical pin-on is made from felt with sequin details.

Although it skews more rustic than our usual picks, it's a fun and funky wardrobe addition.

Considering skulls seem to never fall out of fashion (whether they're Alexander McQueen-style punk or Betsey Johnson's brand of cutesy), you could easily wear it any time of year.

Where: Etsy Shop 609East

Price: $6 plus shipping

Style this accessory after the jump.

Style It: Avoid any grandmotherly impulse you may have to pin this on a plain shirt and call it a day. With a piece this crafty looking, it's important to incorporate it into your wardrobe as an element as opposed to a focal point.

Try pinning it into the folds of a light scarf like this pom-pom adorned black and white one from Diane Von Furstenburg, or this subtle ombre scarf from Bajra.

Now that you're accessorized, go for a sleek jumpsuit as the base for your outfit. This stretch-crepe onesie from Halston Heritage would nicely complement either of the scarves, and it's a statement in and of itself.

Tote a neutral leather carryall like J. Crew's Bond Street tote in taupe with Tory Burch's patent leather ballerina flats in silvery gray.
