If you missed the opportunity to geek-out and see some pretty sweet comic book related costumes at last month's Phoenix Comic Con, here's your next chance to get an eyeful of tight Spandex (good and bad).
From 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. this Thursday, June 9, Scottsdale Public Art is hosting a Zap! Pow! Bam! Costume Ball at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.
The free event -- which features a photo booth, prizes, complimentary nibbles and beats from Super Stereo -- kicks off the Scottsdale Civic Center Library exhibit, Zap! Pow! Bam! The Superhero: The Golden Age of Comic Books, 1938-1950.
If we didn't know better, we'd think that 2011 was the Golden Age of comic books, at least where it comes to public interest. The Marvel franchise is on a roll with Flicks like X-Men: First Class, Thor, and the upcoming Avengers collaboration. New comic book stores are popping up, and Comic Con was so overrun with guests this year that ticket holders had to stand in lines rivaling those at Disneyland.
Also tomorrow night, artist Jon Haddock will be giving a free public gallery talk at the nearby Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. And it's all about -- you guessed it -- comic books.
More on the talk, and Haddock goes bare bear, after the jump...
Just prior to Comic Con, SMoCA unveiled Haddock's "Us Versus Them," which explores his personal experience as a comic book fan, and the accompanying group show "Masters of Collective Reality," a collection of illustrated panels by such nationally-known comic artists as Fred Guardineer, Rory Hayes, and Basil Wolverton.
Haddock will speak about both shows at 7 p.m. tomorrow evening, and don some kind of mystery alter-ego supersuit for a one-of-a-kind performance.
Rumor has it that the costume is more like a furry than a superhero, so at least we won't have to suffer through another Spandex Speedo.
They're saving that travesty for the ball next door.
