Name: Randell Carlton Green
AKA: DJ Rolemodel
Current club nights: Tuesdays at ACME, Fridays at Smashboxx, Saturdays at American Junkie.
Genres spun: You name it and I have it.
Origin story: Started off as a radio DJ while in college. I was actually fired for playing "Rape Me" by Nirvana.
Explanation behind your nickname: I wanted something that represented my other career and passions and in the end I hope that the name represents my performance as a DJ.
Best experience as a DJ: I would say that it is just being the source of entertainment for so many people. I love when I know that I made some people's night or that they even got lucky because of me...ha.
And the worst? Well, it would be the fact on the business end you come across a lot of dishonest people, or people who are "all-talk." In that sense it is just like many other jobs out there.
Preferred poison when DJing: My secret drink..."The Elevator"
Craziest shit you've seen at a club: At this point I feel as if "I've seen it all", but most recently I saw someone jump off the top of the bar, hit his head on a ceiling fan, get up, and run directly into a sliding glass door. Like something straight out of a Jackass movie.
So are you a role model to anyone? Ha ha, Great question. I hope so. I hope that my work ethic inspires others.
What do you like about the Valley's DJ scene? I love the fact that Scottsdale has so many great DJs. I love being associated with the guys who play out of town like D-JR, DJ Circle, J. Alan, Aaron Taylor, Diesel, Steel, and Earth.
What would you change? I would change...hmm, well I would double the pay for every DJ!
What is something about you that might surprise others? I used to be a special education teacher.
Most you've ever been paid for a gig? 97 Euros
Other clubs you've worked: Pussycat Lounge, Jackrabbit, Cream Stereo Lounge, Axis-Radius, The Library, Dos Gringos, ACME Roadhouse, and many others...maybe even a gig outside Starbucks...can't remember.
Bygone club you miss the most: Acme Roadhouse in Tempe without a doubt. Monday nights with DJ J. Alan were a huge motivation for me.
What's your mantra: I want the crowd to have the best night of their lives. I try to play something that they haven't heard in a while, but I also want to play their favorites. I feel there is a relationship with the crowd. Give them what they want, keep em happy, and then I can play something new that they don't know or something obscure that surprises them.
Who are your heroes or major influences? Nationally it's DJ AM, DJ Vice, A-Trak, and DJ Fashen. I have to make sure I shout-out the first concert I went to Roy Orbison...he started my love of music.
Worst request you've ever gotten: So many to pick from! But probably something like, "Can you play some Jay-Z?" (While I am playing Jay-Z)
What sites do you use for music? I can't tell you that!
Where do you shop locally for your music? Ah I used to love Circles, and Swell, but now its mostly online stuff.
Which underground artists have you been championing lately? Love me some Little Boots, and if you don't know Duck Sauce you are missing out.
What else have you been listening to lately? The Black Keys, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Metric. Today was my day off from club music.
Last album purchased: Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark and Twisted Fantasy.
Last song downloaded: Dr. Dre's newest track "Kush."
