Well, this is a surprise: Lil Wayne, just three years removed from a career-making feature in Weezer's "Can't Stop Partying," is playing Phoenix on September 2, just over two weeks from now. Tickets--$50 each, all proceeds benefiting the conveniently named Carter Fund--go on sale tomorrow morning at the Celebrity Theatre's website.
He's described in the press release as "Grammy Award winning hip hop icon, label owner and TRUKFIT apparel brand founder Lil Wayne," but you may know him better as the guy who made Tha Carter III and then appeared on literally-figuratively every hip hop song released in the next two years, and also the one Weezer song.
It's not a typical Lil Wayne show, but however you read this it's a ways removed from his 2011 show in town, where he played the much larger [take breath] Ashley Furniture HomeStore Pavilion, and his 2009 show, which took place at the US Airways Center. (Here's the full slideshow.)
The last few years haven't been especially kind to Lil Wayne, who's dealt with health problems and an unwise Emmett Till reference and diminishing returns on his albums, but he's still a very big get for the Celebrity Theatre--tickets probably won't last long, even with such short notice for the internet rush tomorrow.
So: Are you going to try to pick up some tickets, or has "Mrs. Officer" lost its novelty for you?
