In case you can't guess by looking at this flier, local indie band Banana Gun really likes old science fiction movies. Besides adopting the style when it comes to designing their promotional materials, one of the first songs the band wrote together, "HAL," was loosely based on the computer HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
"The flier for the release show is in that same vein, and we really liked the fact that the art work depicts a sexy woman being saved from a space monster by a super-sweet space hero!" says guitarist Nic Dehaan, who designed the poster. "We're all about blasting space aliens in the name of love."
Though "HAL" won't be featured on their debut self-titled release, which they celebrate with a show at Rogue Bar in Scottsdale tonight, you can expect seven tracks using a multitude of instruments, ranging from cellos to horns to banjos to triangles--not surprisingly, it's hard to categorize the band's sound. Besides using the night as an opportunity to showcase new tunes off the album, Banana Gun is also collecting food donations for St. Mary's Food Bank. If you bring a non-perishable food item, you get in free and also get a copy of the album. For those who don't bring any food stuff, admission is $5.
"It's going to be a great night with some really good, unpretentious, straight-forward music and plenty of drinks," Dehaan says. "We'll be celebrating having the disc finally out. We're already getting the next one put together."
Joining Banana Gun on the bill are Strange Young Things, The Paper Snowmen and Honey Pistol. The show is 21-and-older, and the action starts at 9 p.m. See www.facebook.com/BananaGun for more info on the band.
