A pedestrian walking near train tracks in downtown Flagstaff is dead after trying to run across the tracks as a train passed by.

The Flagstaff Police Department says the man, who has not yet been identified, was walking southbound near the tracks last night as the train approached.

The crossing arms came down to block the road as the train got closer, but the man apparently thought he could cross the tracks before the train reached him. Only, he couldn't.

While trying to beat the train, the man was hit in what witnesses called "a glancing blow."

His body ricocheted off the train and landed on the south side of the tracks.
