The obvious highlight was the no-hitter thrown by Arizona's Edwin Jackson on Friday, the second time an opposing team has been held hitless against the Snakes in their history.
The D-Backs entire pitching staff was wild yet somehow effective as they only gave up seven hits in the series.
In Jackson's surprising and miraculous pitching show in the first game, he was both brilliant and erratic. Though he gave up no hits, his pitch count was at 68 after the first three innings while also walking eight batters.
The former Tampa Bay player ended up throwing a whopping 149 pitches before his arm fell off (just kidding). But Jackson is going to miss his next start on Wednesday so he can rest the cannon.
While the D-Backs pounded out seven hits, they only managed one run, but it was enough. Adam LaRoche's solo blast in the second was the only time anyone crossed home plate, leading to a 1-0 win.
The strong but inconsistent pitching continued Saturday with Ian Kennedy striking out seven Rays in just 5.1 innings pitched. But like Jackson, he was wild and walked nine batters (a career high) and also gave up four hits and two runs.
On the hill for the Rays was David Price who was electric in getting his 11th win of the season. Price baffled the Snakes hitters as he struck out 11 and gave up two runs in seven innings.
Sean Rodriguez and Jason Bartlett each had two runs batted in as the Rays won 5-3.
Fans saw more of the same in the series finale on Sunday: great pitching and minimal offense from both sides, especially the D-Backs.
This time it was Rodrigo Lopez who was dazzling for the Snakes as he surrendered only two hits and one run in six innings. But he did walk five batters as the starters continued to live dangerously.
Even the D-Backs bullpen showed up as Blaine Boyer, Juan Gutierrez, and Aaron Heilman pitched three scoreless innings to close out the game.
The lone offensive firepower for Arizona came off the bat of Gerardo Parra smacked a two-run home run in the fifth as the Snakes held on for a 2-1 win.
Overall, the D-Backs have to be pleased with taking two of three on the road from a very good American league team.
While this brightened up some fans' weekend, the fact is that the Snakes are still 15.5 games out of first in the NL West.
This weekend offered some hope, but not enough to forget the pains of a painful season.
