We watched yesterday as Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio had pink panties thrown at him by female Tent City inmates as he -- and an Elvis impersonator -- belted out Frank Sinatra's "My Way" in celebration of the makeshift jail's 18th year.
It was astonishing -- for anyone unfamiliar with the sheriff's media slutiness, that is. For the rest of us, it was par for the course for Arpaio.
In the past 30 days, Arpaio has invited the media to witness a duet with an Elvis impersonator, introduced a Spanish-language version of his infamous pink undies to prove he's not a racist, spared the city of Phoenix the humiliation of having his female chain-gang smile for the international press at Major League Baseball's All-Star Game, and challenged "any reporter" to a hotdog eating contest.
For the record, America's self-proclaimed "toughest sheriff" wimped out when we accepted his hotdog challenge.
Also for the record, the aforementioned antics all happened within the
past 30 days. Arpaio's been running the show at the MCSO for nearly 20
years -- these are just the most recent stunts in the sheriff's long career as a
publicity stuntman.
That said, we want to know what you think: which Joe Arpaio publicity stunt from the past 30 days is the sleaziest?
