March 31 was a crappy day for 58-year-old James Ferris.
In fact, crappy is an understatement -- with his apartment catching on fire, cops finding 30 binders full of kiddie porn, and having to explain to investigators his penchant for wearing women's underwear.
About 10:30 a.m. on that fateful day, a faulty fan motor caught fire in Ferris' apartment near Baseline Road and Hardy Drive in Tempe, according to documents obtained by New Times.
Tempe firefighters put out the fire, and although Ferris wasn't home, he had left one of his binders chock-full of kiddie porn wide open in the apartment.
That's when the cops come into play, as police say the 400-page binder was very similar to 30 other binders later seized with a search warrant -- in that they all contained pictures of girls between 4 and "pre-teen."
Even creepier, the cops then found women's underwear with holes cut out in the front and multiple jars of Vaseline.
Of course he had an explanation for that -- he told the cops he wears the women's underwear because he "like[s] the soft feel of them."

And if you thought this guy was just holed up in his apartment with his kiddie porn stash and women's underwear, think again.
Ferris told investigators he worked in a kitchen at Arizona Grand Resort, near a pool "where he watches little girls running around in their bathing suits."
Also seized from Ferris' apartment were four computers and hundreds of VHS tapes with hand-written notes on them, which have not yet been reviewed by police.
Ferris was booked on 10 counts of felony sexual exploitation of a minor, although he told police he "didn't think there was anything wrong with having the photos 'behind closed doors.'"
