For anyone who has ever seen Tim Robbins talk about, well, anything political, you probably find it hard to fathom that he would donate much more than a mean-spirited scowl at a extreme right-wing Republican candidate. Like us, you would be wrong.

According to Federal Election Commission records dug up by the Daily Beast, Robbins shelled out $5,000 worth of donations to 10 Republican candidates in the 2006 election cycle, including a $500 check cut to controversial Arizona politico J.D. Hayworth.

"Maybe because I covered the Durham Bulls as a sports broadcaster in the late 1970s and early '80s? Maybe because I used to frequently rent Bob Roberts back in the '90s?" Hayworth jokes with the Beast. "All I can say is, 'Thank you!' I hope he enjoyed the Christmas card."

Records also show that Robbins doled out a $500 donation to CNN's "Wingnut of the Year," Michele Bachman. Click here for New Times' sister paper in the Twin Cities, City Pages', coverage of all the loony bullshit this lady's been up to.

Hayworth is in the process of trying to come up with the cash to pay the legal bills he racked up defending himself from ties to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff. In fact, he recently had a fundraiser hosted by Maricopa County's very own disgrace, Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
