The Arizona Diamondbacks, at the end of one of their worst seasons, announced yesterday that Kevin Towers will be the teams' new general manager.
Towers spent 14 seasons as the GM for the San Diego Padres. In that time, the team won four NL West titles and went to the World Series in 1998, where they were
crushed in four games by the New York Yankees.
Towers is known throughout Major League Baseball for his ability to put together good teams on a limited budget.
We're diggin' him because in his first public address following the announcement that he'd be the team's new GM, he addressed the one request we made yesterday: fix the damn bullpen.
"My goal here is put together a bullpen that's better than San Diego's. To me, it's several weapons. A bullpen's not just the closer. To me, you should have five to six guys that can pitch in the seventh, eight, or ninth inning against the middle-of-the-order hitter and be able to get a strikeout."
Kind of a "no shit" statement, but at least he acknowledges the problem and seems to know how to fix it.
