Greg Stanton, a leading candidate for Phoenix mayor, pulled in more campaign contributions in the past five months than his political challengers.

A first glance at campaign finance reports reveals  that he raised more than $250,000 between January 1 and May 31. During the same period, former Councilwoman Peggy Neely raised about $167,000, Councilman Claude Mattox raised about $150,000 and candidate Wes Gullett pulled in about $116,000.

Gullett's $116K falls short -- about $884,000 short -- of his $1 million fundraising goal by the August 20 election. He better get cracking.

Perhaps being a former political aide for a U.S. Senator, a former gubernatorial chief of staff and a partner in one of Arizona's largest lobbying firms just doesn't pay off as much as people might think.

Overall, Mattox, who has been on the City Council since 2000 and raising money since he first started exploringa run for mayor in 2009, has the largest pot of cash at more than $350,000.
