If you think Starbucks' new Horchata Frappucino is a bust, take a trip to Tres Leches Café.

The popular Phoenix-based, Mexican-inspired coffee bar recently debuted its fall drink lineup, and there are some irresistible new items on the menu — including a new pumpkin horchata drink. The drink is a frothy, sugary blend of horchata and pumpkin pie.

"It took me three months to figure out the balance of flavors," says Tres Leches Cafe owner ET Rivera, who designs all the drinks himself. In the end, he was able to achieve a flavor that he describes as "pumpkin pie dipped in horchata."

Another popular drink from the fall menu is Azteca de calabaza, which features chocolate blended with pumpkin pie. It's a deeply flavorful drink, one tasting of equal parts chocolate and pumpkin pie.

And if you love the shop's popular cinnamon-scented Café Churro, you'll want to check out La Morena, which Rivera calls the "dark brown sister" to the Café Churro.

There's always something new happening at Tres Leches. Next, Rivera is working on a new winter menu he calls "Cafe Escondido." The name, he says, alludes to drinks where the flavor of the coffee is not "disruptive." Rivera hopes these will appeal to non-coffee drinkers. Many will feature white espresso, a light roast with a strong caffeine concentration.

"This is me introducing a new way to drink coffee," he says.

If you want to sample the new fall flavors, the best time to go is during happy hour. From 2 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, all drink prices are reduced by a dollar.
