A letter from our editor

Phoenix New Times turns 50 this year. Fifty! Half a century as the independent voice of the Valley — the go-to source of fearless investigative reporting, street-level arts and culture coverage, and recommendations for things to do in the city. As this desert town has transformed into the fifth most populous city in the country, we’ve reflected it all back to you — the good, the bad, and the Arpaio.

Historically, advertising is how we pay the bills here at New Times. Many of our advertisers are the local bars, restaurants, clubs, institutions, and event organizers that make Phoenix such a wonderful place to live. The coronavirus, which keeps people stuck inside rather than out gathering in public, is currently pummeling those people and businesses. And because the health of our business is dependent on the health of our advertisers’ business, that means we’re hurting too. Our entire staff here at New Times recently took significant pay cuts. We’ve had to lay off beloved colleagues. It’s rough out there right now for local media.

In fact, it was rough out there before this pandemic found its way to our shores. Today, tech giants gobble up more than two-thirds of all digital ad revenue in the U.S. That means a huge amount of advertising money that used to stay in Phoenix and fund journalism here now rockets out to the coasts, where it lines the pockets of people who have nothing invested in our local community. As a result, local news operations are left scrambling to figure out how to pay for the journalism their readers expect. That’s why your newspaper keeps getting thinner, or you’re encountering more paywalls, or — in our case — there’s way more ads on the website than there used to be.

Those ads are our lifeblood — they’re how we pay for the daily news, arts, music, food and drink, and marijuana coverage you consume. But we’re aware that some of you would prefer a more streamlined online reading experience. So, we have a deal for you: Become a member of the Phoenix New Times community, and we’ll give you a totally ad-free experience on the site. For you, that means making a recurring monthly or annual cash contribution. On our end, we’ll remove all the ads, making for a faster, cleaner reading experience at phoenixnewtimes.com. (If you don’t mind the ads, the site will remain free to all — but you can still help fund local journalism by making a contribution or simply signing up for one or more of our newsletters.) Those of you who make financial contributions will also have the option to hear from me now and then. Once you’ve contributed, an option will appear on your member profile page allowing you to opt in to receive occasional letters regarding some of the Phoenix New Times stories you’ve already read, as well as developments at New Times itself.

New Times isn’t going away. We reach more readers than ever before, and our investigative reporting continues to have a major impact on life in the Valley, holding power accountable and giving voice to the marginalized. The New Times membership campaign is our solution for how to maintain that level of quality journalism amid an international pandemic and a uniquely challenging digital advertising environment. We hope you’ll consider joining up. Either way, we’re grateful for your support over these last 50 years in Phoenix. Here’s to 50 more.
