Sushi Sonora claims to be the first Mex-sushi restaurant in metro Phoenix, and it continues to be one of the most popular spots to indulge in cheesy, deep-fried rolls. Specialties here include the Dinamita (“dynamite”) roll, a tempura-battered and deep-fried roll stuffed with cooked shrimp, cream cheese, and avocado. But everything else will seem like health food in comparison to another house specialty, the Percheron roll (named after the much-loved, oversize draft horse). The roll, which looks like a burrito and comes wrapped in tinfoil, is stuffed with carne asada, pollo, bacon, avocado, the whole thing glued together with massive amounts of yellow cheese.
