Section three of the Defense of Marriage Act was ruled unconstitutional Wednesday, marking a huge step forward for marriage equality. Thursday is the 44th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, giving the LGBTQ community and its allies plenty of reasons to celebrate.
No victory is complete without some music, so here are 10 songs to consider singing along to at the top of your lungs (lip synching is okay, too) in celebration of the DOMA ruling.
Scissor Sisters -- Let's Have a Kiki According to the band, a "kiki" is "a party including good music and good friends, held for the express purpose of calming nerves, reducing anxiety and stress and generally fighting ennui. May involve locked doors, tea, and salacious gossip." The kiki is now a mainstay in gay celebrations, so kiki until the sun comes up.
The Weather Girls -- It's Raining Men Gay men and straight women can't complain about a deluge of hot men falling from the sky. The overturn of DOMA is another reason to shout "hallelujah" and embrace some fabulousness.
Diana Ross -- I'm Coming Out Coming out is never easy, but as acceptance of the LGBTQ community grows, there is no shame in identifying as gay.
Tom Robinson Band -- Glad to be Gay This was a pretty progressive song for 1977. It addresses violence and gays being accused of being child molesters. 2013 is still backwards in some regards, but there's no denying that progress is being made.
Lady Gaga -- Born This Way Gaga embraces all forms of love and emphasizes that God doesn't make any mistakes.
Cher -- Believe Believing in "life after love" is only part of the equation. The DOMA overturn gave the LGBTQ community plenty of reasons to believe in their cause and to continue fighting the good fight. Plus, this list wouldn't be complete without some Cher.
Gloria Gaynor -- I Will Survive Opponents will try to belittle the gay community, but it's important to be strong and stand your ground.
RuPaul -- The Beginning The music video starts off with the top three contestants of the fifth season of RuPaul's Drag Race on trial by Judge Rudy. We can't help but think that Ru would make one hell of a supreme court justice at "the beginning" of more great things for the LGBTQ community.
Queen -- Don't Stop Me Now Who doesn't love Freddie Mercury? Wednesday's ruling could start a momentum that shouldn't slow up any time soon, so scream it from the rooftops.
Bikini Kill -- Rebel Girl Edie Windsor is the quintessential rebel girl. She challenged DOMA after being faced with a $363,000 inheritance fee when her partner, Thea Spyer passed away because their marriage was not recognized in the United States. It's one hell of a love story, and Thea would be proud.
