Whenever my brothers and I are together, it's pretty difficult for anyone to understand our conversation unless they have a strong knowledge of Dumb & Dumber, Ace Ventura, or Anchorman quotes. And when I heard there was going to be an Anchorman: The Legend Continues film, I had my hopes set high.
And when heavy metal is combined with either movies or sports, it's always a win. So when I heard that Anchorman's "Ron Burgundy" (a.k.a. Will Ferrell) made an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, a sports talk radio show with a host that has a solid appreciation for heavy metal, I was pretty stoked.
Of course, lately Ron Burgundy-slash-Will Ferrell has been popping up just about everywhere--from car commercials to interviewing Peyton Manning on ESPN. I was starting to feel a little disgusted at the prospect that Anchorman was selling out.
When infamous San Diego newsman Burgundy made a visit to the radio show, he had some comments about the intro to a segment called "The Stat of the Day," which features vocals shouted by Hatebreed's Jamey Jasta (that's also GWAR taking the reigns for "Wheel of Punishment.") Host Dan Patrick has always embraced metal on the show, whether it's because he himself loves it or else he recognizes that a lot of sports fans love it. In fact, Jasta himself came on the show this past January to discuss the making of the song.
But would you think that Ron Burgundy is a fan? He showed up and did three versions of Jasta's theme song. After stating that he thought Patrick was "losing viewers and listeners" by Jasta's theme song, he shouted and screamed his own version, and his hair surprisingly didn't even fall out of place. Then he did a jazz version (of course.)
In fact, Burgundy's versions were enough to get Jasta to notice--he actually tweeted about it-- all the way from his tour in Australia.
Anchorman: The Legend Continues comes out in theaters this Friday. And while Hatebreed released an album earlier this year, The Divinity of Purpose, let's hope that Jasta is mixing up something in the heavy metal band's newsroom for release in 2014.
