If you haven't heard of Dale Chihuly, put a rubber band on your wrist, pull it back and snap that baby as punishment. This is an artist you should know. He's one of the most highly esteemed contemporary living artists and he recently decked out the Desert Botanical Garden with his tremendous glass work in "Chihuly: The Nature of Glass".
My talented and accomplished colleague, Kathleen Vanesian, got a sneak peek of the show this past Friday and snapped some amazing photos.
Consider this slideshow as a tasty appetizer to a tremendous feast. Only a visit to see this work in the flesh will satisfy your hunger.
Oh, and to answer your question: yes, Chihuly did the ceiling at the Bellagio in Vegas.
And for all you West-siders, West Valley Art Museum is bussing people out to see Chihuly's work this Friday, November 28th at 4:30 p.m. So gas prices and geographical inconvenience is no excuse this time.
Chihuly: The Nature of Glass remains open until May 31, 2009 at Desert Botanical Garden, 1201 N. Galvin Pkwy in Phoenix, 480-947-1225, www.dbg.org.
Tickets to West Valley Art Museum's bus trip to the exhibition are available in the Museum Store, 17420 N. Avenue of the Arts in Surprise, or by phone with credit card, 623-972-0635, www.wvam.org.
